No major adverse effects of perioperative acupuncture were reported in the enrolled studies. Conclusion: Perioperative acupuncture may provide pain relief without side effects in patients undergoing tonsillectomy.

Based on NATTINA results, tonsillectomy should be offered to adults with severe recurrent acute tonsillitis instead of a repeated attempt of conservative therapy.
Tonsillectomy is a common, minimally invasive, and relatively safe surgical operation. Although the surgical technology for such minor operations is mature and widely available in most countries worldwide, postoperative adverse complications occur and may be hazardous and fatal.
Furthermore, acupuncture might alleviate excessive inflammation after surgery by reducing levels of interleukin (IL)-1 β, IL-6, and S100β. Therefore, acupuncture might be helpful to relieve postoperative symptoms such as delirium, pain, nausea, and vomiting and enhance postoperative recovery.
