  1. 20 Απρ 2019 · Yes, they can. The darkroom I work in uses the strips of red LEDs you can get to put in car rear windows, all run from a 12 volt supply, as safelights and they work brilliantly. I believe that fairly extensive tests were done before I joined: leaving paper out for hours & then checking for fogging.

  2. I used very bright red LEDs in my darkroom. If you know the spectral range of your bulb (it’s often published by the manufacturer), and it doesn’t overlap with the spectral sensitivity of your paper, then your LED will work fine. Or at least not fog your paper.

  3. Reinforced my view that a paper safe allows you to ruin more paper with a single accident than anything else in the darkroom. :) At home I use a red led bike light as a safelight, and in the public darkroom I use I've used a red led mini light, both with no issues.

  4. 1 Μαρ 2024 · If you didn’t know the best red safelights reach peak wavelength at around 620-630 nm. If they are in this range they are suitable for use in the darkroom without fogging the bw photographic material. Safelight is usually made from an ordinary light bulb in a special housing closed with coloured filters.

  5. I use an LED bulb for safelight, but make sure you test for fogging anyway. While a red LED is most likely safe, a lot of “red” led bulbs are in fact white leds with red filters.

  6. 14 Φεβ 2022 · If you get a random red-tinted lightbulb or LED emitter, you may or may not be able to successfully use it as a safelight. You might get lucky and it may just be the right spectrum to do the job, or it may ruin that precious box of Ilford paper.
