It is determined by two key factors: the magnitude of the force applied and the distance from the point of rotation, commonly referred to as the lever arm. The basic formula for torque (τ) is given by: τ = r × F. where r is the lever arm’s length and F is the force applied.
Torque is the rotational counterpart of force. Suppose a body rotates about an axis and a force \(F\) is applied some distance \(r\) from the axis (Fig. \(\PageIndex{1}\)). The distance from the rotation axis to the point at which the force is applied is called the moment arm.
