18 Σεπ 2024 · There have been 427 Massachusetts line of duty deaths since 1776. Two of those deaths occurred in New Bedford. New Bedford Police Officer James G. England "was shot and killed with his own service weapon while struggling with a mentally disturbed suspect as he investigated a domestic call in a home."
The official count from the FBI is that 27 law enforcement officers were 'feloniously' killed in the line of duty in 2013 (the lowest in a 35-year period 1980–2014), and an additional 49 died in accidents (total: 76).
