1 Ιουν 2017 · Tracheostomy is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the adult ICU. Contrary to adult practice, tracheostomy is a much less common procedure in the pediatric ICU, being performed in < 3% of patients.
Tracheomalacia and bronchomalacia both refer to airway collapse. This occurs when the child’s airway, or trachea, is abnormally shaped, or too soft and pliable, or both. The trachea typically has C-shaped rings of cartilage that help the airway stay open during exhalation.
In congenital tracheomalacia, symptoms tend to appear when a baby is between 4 weeks and 8 weeks old as they start to breathe out forcefully enough to hear a barking sound. Sometimes, a child can show signs of tracheomalacia later in infancy or childhood during respiratory illness.
