In congenital tracheomalacia, symptoms tend to appear when a baby is between 4 weeks and 8 weeks old as they start to breathe out forcefully enough to hear a barking sound. Sometimes, a child can show signs of tracheomalacia later in infancy or childhood during respiratory illness.

Most infants respond well to humidified air, careful feedings and antibiotics for infections. Babies with tracheomalacia must be closely monitored when they have respiratory infections. Often, the symptoms of tracheomalacia improve as the infant grows. Rarely, surgery is needed.
Symptoms of Tracheomalacia. Noisy breathing that may change with position and improve during sleep. Cough or noisy breathing that gets worse with activity. Breathing problems that get worse with coughing, crying, feeding or upper respiratory infections. High-pitched breathing or rattling during breathing.
If your child has tracheomalacia, it can be hard to breathe and you may hear a vibrating noise or wheezing sound when they breathe out. Most of the time, the first signs of tracheomalacia are seen when an infant is between four and eight weeks old.
