Clinical nurse mentors act as role models to students and have the opportunity to instil professional values and integrity in clinical settings. They support students in practicing safe, person-centred care that is in line with EU Directive 2013/55/EU Article 31 (page 4).

Mentoring is a dynamic, supportive relationship between two individuals which exists to develop the mentee either within their current role or for the future. Mentoring differs from coaching in that it takes a holistic view of the mentee, is an on-going relationship and the agenda is usually set by the mentee with the mentor
While the theory of Mentoring up would benefit from testing and further refinement, including the perspective of the mentor, it is a strong starting point to provide a foundation for a critical professional responsibility in nursing.
