While the theory of Mentoring up would benefit from testing and further refinement, including the perspective of the mentor, it is a strong starting point to provide a foundation for a critical professional responsibility in nursing.

Mentorship in nursing is a therapeutic relationship that exists between experienced nurses and less experienced nurses to help them gain more knowledge or experience in the profession.
This chapter provides a definition of mentoring, including a brief history of the field, and compellingly demonstrates the benefits of and the need for mentorship programs to support the field of nursing today and into the future.
