Mentorship in nursing is a therapeutic relationship that exists between experienced nurses and less experienced nurses to help them gain more knowledge or experience in the profession.
Ideally, after a nurse completes orientation, he/she will be mentored. Mentoring may be a formal or informal. Process works best when it is intentional. Purpose is to: encourage, support and guide nurses in their positions so that they will continue to grow personally and professionally.
A review of the literature includes descriptions of formal and informal mentoring as well as the description of mentoring in the role transition process. The goal of the study by Hale and Phillips was to develop a theory to address the processes involved in nurse-to-nurse mento-ring relationships.1.
