Mentorship in nursing is a therapeutic relationship that exists between experienced nurses and less experienced nurses to help them gain more knowledge or experience in the profession.
Mentoring in nurse-to-nurse relationship is important for developing the next generation of nurses and for supporting experienced nurses during role transitions across their career.
Ideally, after a nurse completes orientation, he/she will be mentored. Mentoring may be a formal or informal. Process works best when it is intentional. Purpose is to: encourage, support and guide nurses in their positions so that they will continue to grow personally and professionally.
