Marcus theory. Originally introduced by R. A. Marcus in 1956 as a method for calculating rates of electron transfer in outer-sphere processes. It has since been extended and refined significantly to address a variety of different types of transformations.
Marcus explained outer sphere electron transfer, introducing reorganization energy and electronic coupling to relate the thermodynamic transition state to nonequilib- rium fluctuations of the medium polarization [56–58].
In a following development of the theory Marcus introduced a generalized reaction coordinate (the energy difference of the two energy surfaces at each point) and the problem of the multidimen-sional PESs was reduced, by a statistical mechanical averaging, to a discussion in terms of free energy curves. Most significantly, all of respiration (the way we get energy from food and oxygen) and photosynthesis (they way plants make the food and oxygen we consume) rely entirely on electron transfer reactions between cofactors in proteins.
21 Φεβ 2020 · This book discusses the tunnel effect in Physical, Chemical and Biological Processes, Elements of Dielectric Theory, and Elements of Proton and Other Light-Atom Transfer Theory as well as some Selected Experimental Data for Simple Electron Transfer Reactions.
Electron transfers are frequently rather fast, compared with many reactions which undergo, instead, a breaking of chemical bonds and a forming of new ones. Accordingly, the study of a large body of fast electron transfer reactions became accessible with the introduc-tion of this instrumentation.
