  1. Signalment. Most cats presenting with FLUTD are between 1 and 10 years of age.4 In cats younger than 10 years, feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) is the most common cause (55% to 63%), followed by urolithiasis (15% to 22%) and urethral plugs (10% to 21%).

  2. Many treatments have been recommended for managing cats with feline urinary tract disease (FLUTD). Veterinarians making therapeutic decisions should consider the quality of evidence supporting a recommendation to use (or not use) a particular treatment for cats with FLUTD.

  7. FLUTD in cats < 10 years of age is feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC), followed by uroliths, and urethral plugs. A diagnosis of FIC is made by excluding all other causes of FLUTD. In older cats (> 10 years), urinary tract infection and/or uroliths are the most common cause of FLUTD.
