You can twist the lever a little to shift one gear or twist it more to shift over several gears, depending on what gear you need for the conditions. Shifting the left shifter (see the 6 illustrations below) controls the front derailleur and moves the chain onto the different chainrings.
Once you're pedaling comfortably, you shift gears every time you feel your legs starting to strain or spin too quickly. For the former, you shift to an easier gear. For the latter, you shift into a harder one. In other words, there's no right or wrong gear to be in. Just use the one that feels right for your legs and breathing at the time.
Shifting gears. Shift gears to suit your riding speed and the terrain. You should always be pedaling when you shift, and you should use a gear that allows for smooth, efficient pedal strokes. Your right levers move your rear gears. The big lever moves you to easy (bigger) gears. The small lever moves you to harder (smaller) gears.
