The twenty-third season of British science fiction television series Doctor Who, known collectively as The Trial of a Time Lord, aired in weekly episodes from 6 September to 6 December 1986.
The prosecution is led by the Valeyard (Michael Jayston) who wants the Doctor to be dead for good. The Inquisitor (Lynda Bellingham) in the trial tries to be fair to the Doctor. The courtroom view events in the sixth Doctor's timestream taken from the Matrix databank and put on a video screen.
Season 23 of Doctor Who ran from 6 September 1986 to 6 December 1986. It starred Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor, Nicola Bryant as Peri Brown and Bonnie Langford as Melanie Bush. Though produced as four separate serials from a practical standpoint, it aired as a single, connected serial entitled The Trial of a Time Lord.
In the serial, the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) is put on trial by his own people, the Time Lords, accused of meddling in the affairs of Earth far in the future, when it has been renamed Ravolox and relocated light years from its original location.
Not Guilty was actually a parody of the real-life The Trial of a Time Lord, the name of the story arc running throughout Season 23 of Doctor Who, with an inexplicably sentient version of the story itself taking the place of the Sixth Doctor as the accused defending an unfairly-warped reputation.
In the serial, the alien time traveller the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) is put on trial by his people, the Time Lords, and is accused of meddling in the affairs of the planet Thoros Beta in the 24th century.
The Valeyard, the prosecuting Time Lord, explains that this is an impartial inquiry into the Doctor's behaviour, which, he hopes to prove, is unbecoming of a Time Lord. Furthermore, he intends to prove that the first law of time has been broken.
