In general, the main function of the triceps surae is to perform plantar flexion of the foot at the ankle joint, allowing the heel to elevate against gravity. This results in generation of the propulsion force required for actions such as walking, jumping or leaping.
Function. Contraction of the triceps surae induce plantar flexion (sagittal plane) and stabilization of the ankle complex in the transverse plane. Functional activities include primarily movement in the sagittal plane, stabilization during locomotion (walking, running), restraining the body from falling and power jumping.
1 Αυγ 1998 · In the present study, we used this technique to determine architectural characteristics of the human triceps surae muscles in passive and active conditions and related architectural changes to joint positions so as to discuss their functional implications.
16 Ιαν 2013 · There is no general consensus as to whether the triceps surae muscle, the major plantar flexor group, contributes to the propulsive action (active thrust or ‘push-off’) or to the support action, or both. Debate has been surrounding the functional role of ankle flexors for some time.
Triceps surae is not responsible for the generation of propulsive force but is merely supporting the body during walking and restraining it from falling. By controlling the disequilibrium torque, however, triceps can affect the propulsive force through the exchange of potential into kinetic energy.
3.1 Triceps surae muscle-tendon unit. The triceps surae MTU is unique in that it combines the function of two muscles, soleus and gastrocnemius, through a shared aponeurosis in series with a common tendon (Blitz & Eliot, 2008).
