Peter was a central leader in the early church (Matt 16:18), despite denying Jesus three times (Mark 14:66–72). After Jesus restored him (John 21:15–19), Peter would go on to preach at Pentecost (Acts 2), escape from prison (Acts 12:1–17), and carry the gospel throughout the Roman Empire.
Peter’s second epistle was written about A.D. 66, shortly after his first epistle (see 2 Pet. 3:1) and a short while before his martyrdom (see 2 Pet. 1:13–14). Second Peter is the swan song of Peter, just as 2 Timothy is the swan song of Paul. There are striking similarities between the two books.
