17 Οκτ 2024 · How to Get a Learner’s Permit in California. Schedule an appointment at the CA DMV. We recommend booking an appointment with your nearest California DMV office. Some locations won’t let you in if you don’t book in advance. It’s also a huge time saver at other locations!
If you’re under 17½, you’re required to complete a DMV-approved drivers ed course to earn your permit. If you’re taking a course, review the material before you take the test. Practice permit tests can also help you get an idea of what the test will be like.

Take Your Permit Exam. Once you have completed Driver's Ed it's time to visit your local DMV and take your Learner's Permit Exam. For faster service make an appointment. You can choose whether to apply for a REAL ID-compliant permit or a standard permit.
