20 Αυγ 2024 · Upland Forest Ecosystems. This section gives an introduction to Florida's upland forest ecosystems. Coral reefs, inshore marine systems, mangroves, salt marshes, freshwater aquatic systems, and grassland ecosystems are not included in this section in order to maintain focus, but are of equal importance to those introduced here.
Most tropical and subtropical coniferous forest ecoregions are found in the Nearctic and Neotropical realms, from Mexico to Nicaragua and on the Greater Antilles, Bahamas, and Bermuda. Other tropical and subtropical coniferous forests ecoregions occur in Asia.

Pine Rocklands are considered a globally critically imperiled habitat unique to South Florida and the Bahamas. In Miami-Dade County, this slash pine forest once spanned more than 186,000 acres along the oolitic limestone Miami Rock Ridge that bisects the county on a NE/SW axis.
Current Project Results. There are 2.4 million acres of longleaf pine ecosystems confirmed in Florida. Seventy-two percent (1.73 million acres) is longleaf dominant or co-dominant in canopy. Forty-one percent of mapped longleaf pine (983,000 acres) occurs on private lands.
Location Map. Description. The coniferous forest is sandwiched in between the tundra to the north and the deciduous forest to the south. One type of coniferous forest, the northern boreal forest, is found in 50° to 60°N latitudes.
