Tropical deserts are found in Baja California and interior Mexico in North America. The most important controlling factor of the climate characteristics of the tropical desert climate is the year-round presence of subtropical high pressure.
Most deserts are found near latitudes 30° N and S where the subtropical highs are located. Subtropical highs are large areas of high pressure in the Earth's atmosphere that occur in the subtropical regions, roughly between 20 and 35 degrees latitude in both hemispheres.
