Scammers copy items with hundreds or even thousands of positive reviews and send them to Amazon fulfillment for a lower price than the authentic product. The long history of positive reviews covers for the more recent 1-stars, so sort them by date before ordering.
On the other hand, if the negative reviews actually list specific problems with the product then they can usually be trusted. The biggest red flag is if the negative reviews all list the same specific problem, the positive reviews are all generic, and the brand is unfamiliar
The BBB had reviews that showed multiple people victims of the scam. Although not a BBB accredited business I filed a complaint with the BBB and received a full refund from the scam company a week before my card company sent me the paperwork to file a claim about the charge.
The better news is that Amazon guards its reputation fiercely. If you've been scammed by a fake seller that disappears into the night, just contact Amazon's customer service department: odds are pretty good that they'll be eager to return your money.
