4 Ιουν 2012 · A frequent clinical concern is the treatment of patients with normal T4 and T3 with suppressed TSH. An isolated low TSH is particularly common in older patients. Most clinicians will follow these patients, without treatment unless they are symptomatic.
Of those with clearly elevated serum TSH levels, only 39% had low serum T4 levels; the remainder had serum T4 levels in the lower half of the normal range. An elevated serum TSH level has been noted as a sensitive marker of thyroid deficiency in the elderly, and is often the only way to detect it. 12
