Benvolio says that Tybalt has sent a challenge to Romeo, and Mercutio scornfully describes Tybalt as a conceited killer. Enter Romeo: Mercutio kids Romeo about love, and Romeo joins in the bawdy repartee. Enter Nurse and Peter: Mercutio bawdily mocks the Nurse, who tells Romeo that she wants a word in private with him. Exeunt Mercutio and Benvolio:
Rise, beautiful sun, and kill the jealous moon, which is already sick and pale with grief because Juliet, her maid, is more beautiful than she is. Don’t be her maid, since she’s jealous. The moon’s virginity makes her look sick and green, and only fools hold on to their virginity. Throw it off.
Mercutio says Romeo can’t face Tybalt in his depressed state—Tybalt is masterful and even artistic duelist who could “butcher […] a silk button.” As Romeo approaches, Benvolio urges Mercutio to be quiet.

When he recognizes Romeo at the Capulet ball, Tybalt takes it as a slight against his family. It is a telling insight into his idea of honor that Tybalt’s reaction to finding Romeo at the party is to take justice into his own hands and seek Romeo out for a fight.
