On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Chernobyl had a terrible nuclear accident that changed the course of history. In the following weeks, a large amount of radioactive material was released into the atmosphere due to the explosion, fire at the plant, and the exposure of the core.
The Chernobyl/Chornobyl Story Map Journal combines narrative text with maps and images. It contains entries and sections that users can scroll through. Each section in the Map Journal has an associated map or an image.
Chernobyl was chosen as the site of Ukraine's first nuclear power plant in 1972, located 15 kilometres (9 mi) north of the city, which opened in 1977. Chernobyl was evacuated on 5 May 1986, nine days after a catastrophic nuclear disaster at the plant, which was the largest nuclear disaster in history.
