It contains mainly fibers from the anterior rami of spinal nerves C8 and T1, but may sometimes carry C7 fibers as well. From its origin, the ulnar nerve courses distally through the axilla, arm and forearm into the hand.

The ulnar nerve is the main nerve of the hand. It is one of the branches of the brachial plexus which arises from the medial cord and consists of nerve fibers from the anterior rami of the seventh and eighth cervical and first thoracic nerves (C7, C8, and T1).
The ulnar nerve (C7, C8, T1) is a mixed nerve of the upper limb. At first, it is located medially in the anterior part of the upper arm together with the axillary artery and median nerve. The nerve then passes dorsally.
The Ulnar Nerve (n. ulnaris) is placed along the medial side of the limb, and is distributed to the muscles and skin of the forearm and hand. It arises from the medial cord of the brachial plexus, and derives its fibers from the eighth cervical and first thoracic nerves.
