My experience is that you'd want to use a wood conditioner to help the stain go on as evenly as possible. Maple tends to be blotchy, even with conditioner, so what tends to happen is that you end up putting on multiple coats to try & even things out, & the piece ends up darker than planned.

8 Οκτ 2005 · For a natural look, you could use wipe-on oil based polyurethane. It will give the maple a slight amber tone, but looks great. Water based poly won't have the same ambering effect. Try a small can and experiment on scrap first. If you are worried about how well you can stain maple, you can cover it with a sanding sealer first.
I think theyre beautiful but look slightly too unfinished. We've asked our contractor to add another coat of a light stain or seal to make them just slightly darker and glossier, but I feel I need to be more specific with the ask.
