Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) covers basic services such as visits to the doctor, lab costs and hospital costs. It is free of charge for Albertans (including international students). It does not cover dental care, eyeglasses or prescription medication. A supplementary healthcare plan may cover a portion of these costs if you have it.

Health care coverage serves as proof of eligibility for an individual to receive publicly-funded health services. Without valid health care coverage, individuals may be required to pay for health services beforehand. It is a good idea to carry your health insurance card with you at all times.
The University of Alberta (UAlberta) requires all incoming exchange students to enroll in the University of Alberta Health Insurance Plan (UAHIP). Coverage by any other insurance plan (with the exception of the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan) will *not* allow you to be exempted from UAHIP.
