Salinas began as a reporter, anchor and public-affairs host for KMEX-TV, the Univision affiliate in Los Angeles, in 1981. She became the anchor of the national Spanish-language news program Noticiero Univision in 1987.
In December 2017, she replaced former co-anchor Maria Elena Salinas on Noticiero Univision, becoming the first Afro-Latina to anchor a weekday primetime newscast for a major broadcast network in the United States.
Guillermo Restrepo served as the newscast's first anchor and was later joined by Teresa Abate (later Teresa Rodriguez) - the latter of whom became the first Hispanic female anchor of a national newscast in the United States.
