A common medical cause of presentation with a distended abdomen accompanied by dull percussion (with or without shifting), fluid thrill, and bulging flanks is ascites. Further imaging modalities such as ultrasound or CT scan of the abdomen and abdominal paracentesis can be used to evaluate underlying etiology of abdominal distension.

SAAG remains the most sensitive and specific marker for the differentiation of ascites due to portal hypertension from ascites due to other causes.
