The cervical spine has seven vertebrae, which may be divided into two groups that are distinct both anatomically and func-tionally: the upper pair (C1 and C2, the atlas and axis) and the lower five (C3–C7) (Fig. 1). The upper cervical spine has the first and second vertebrae – the atlas and axis – and forms a unit with the occiput.
24 Ιουλ 2010 · Figure 2.1 illustrates the surface anatomy of the cervical spine (C-spine). The C-spine consists of seven vertebrae (C1–C7) and supports the weight of the head (approximately 14 pounds).
16 Μαΐ 2018 · The human spinal column consists of 33 vertebrae organized into five regions. The vertebrae are interconnected by discs and supported by ligaments. Each region has characteristics suited to its location and functions. The cervical region has the greatest flexibility to allow rotation of the head.
In the cervical and upper thoracic spine, side bend-ing is coupled with axial rotation in the same direc-tion. In the lumbar spine, lateral bending is coupled with axial rotation in the opposite direction. Figure 2. Regional coupling patterns of lateral bending and axial rotation. Image modified and adapted from White, A.A. and M.M. Panjabi (1990).

Doctors often refer to these verte- brae as C1 to C7. The cervical spine starts where the top vertebra (C1) connects to the bottom of the skull. The cervical spine curves slightly inward and ends where C7 joins the top of the thoracic spine (the chest area). This guide gives a general overview of the anatomy of the neck. It should help.
An in depth understanding of cervical spine anatomy is essential to the diagnosis and man-agement of cervical spine pathology. From the osseous anatomy down to the soft tissues structures that function to stabilize, maintain, and protect the spinal cord clinicians must be able to appreciate the biomechanics and the complex anatomy. For patients ...
