Explore this 4.4-mile out-and-back trail near Castella, California. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 1 h 30 min to complete. This is a popular trail for fishing and hiking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day.
The “Upper Sac” is freestone fishing at its best! The portion of the river commonly called the Upper Sacramento begins below Lake Siskiyou (near the town of Mt. Shasta) and tumbles downstream for nearly 40 miles through canyons and a terraced, typical freestone setting, eventually dumping into Lake Shasta.
The Upper Sacramento River originates from water flowing off Mount Shasta to the north (a 14,000-foot dormant volcano) and from the Klamath Mountains to the west. The river flows south for approximately 40 miles, joined by numerous tributary streams, and empties into Lake Shasta above Shasta Dam.
