In my mind Lum the Forever will always be the end of the anime -- much as I enjoy Inaba the Dream Maker and some of the OVAs -- when Ataru is forcibly thrown by a crazy explosion into Lum's arms. And the closing credits, with "Melancholy no Kiseki" and the photo montage, are sublime.

Btw this is the last page of the manga so spoilers for those who don't know the ending yet! I don't think it spoils what exactly will happen on the 5th movie though. Couldn't attach the 2nd photo for some reason. Here's the translation: Lum 「Even if it takes my entire life, I'll make ya' say it.」 Ataru 「I'll say it on my deathbed.」 ??
Synopsis. Lum and Ataru must play another game of tag, or the Earth will be infested with mushrooms larger than buildings. Further, should Ataru lose, Lum will leave forever and everyone's memories will be changed so that they don't remember she, or her friends, were ever there.
Yes the 80’s anime did adapt the manga’s ending (which came in the form of movie 5) there were a few extra stuff like added flashbacks and stuff but it doesn’t change the plot of the finale and the it is essentially the same.
