20 Ιουν 2011 · As early as 1806, proposals for a two cent coin struck in billon (an alloy of mostly copper with a small amount of silver) circulated in Congress. The ease with which billon coins could be "counterfeited" quickly put an end to this idea.

Obverse Details. On the obverse, we observe a shield design that signifies strength and resilience. The shield is adorned with a banner containing the words “IN GOD WE TRUST,” marking its historical significance as the first U.S. coinage to include this motto. This expression of national sentiment was particularly poignant during the Civil War era.
The 1864 Large Motto 2-cent coin is the most commonly encountered date. The quality, color and surface condition of Proofs should be treated the same as for any other copper composition coin in the US series.
