To date, 119 lighthouses have been sold or transferred out of federal ownership, with 74 transferred at no cost to preservationists, and 45 sold by auction to the public.
CHICAGO – The U.S. General Services Administration announces the public sale of the Poe Reef, Ontonagon Breakwater and Superior Entry lighthouses as part of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act (NHLPA) program’s effort to find new owners for these historic structures.

The Coast Guard does not accept volunteer lighthouse keepers. Many of the light stations that have been turned over to the National Park Service or the various states, however, do permit volunteers to staff their lighthouses. Check with the National Park Service or with your local historical preservation society.
