April–June. June 25: North Korea invades South Korea beginning the Korean War. April 14 – NSC 68 is issued by the United States National Security Council, advocating the development of the hydrogen bomb, increased military aid to America's allies, and the rollback of communist expansion.
These are some of the important events in American history during the decade starting 1950. The Cold War and the spread of Communism in Eastern Europe, China, and Korea in the late 1940s and early 1950s prompted the United States to increase dramatically its defense spending.
