Field hockey at the 2012 Olympic Games in London took place from 29 July to 11 August at the Riverbank Arena within the Olympic Park. On 13 November 2010 the International Hockey Federation (FIH) decided to allocate 12 teams for each men and women events respectively. [1]

In an attempt to make the sport easier to follow on televion, all matches were played with a pink ball on a blue pitch - quickly dubbed “smurf turf.”.
The US ice hockey team caused a huge upset by defeating the favored Soviet Union at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics. The team was coached by Herb Brooks , who was the last player to be cut from the 1960 team (which also won gold).
