Santol is a hermaphroditic tree flowering after 5-7 years (clonally propagated trees may flower after 3-4 years). Pollination is by insects. Flowers annually and in Peninsular Malaysia the flowering period is so reliable in its timing that it was formerly the signal for the planting of rice.
Mapping units of the Vegetation Map of Africa reflect both a physiognomic (i.e. based on vegetation structure) and a phytochoristic (i.e. based on floristics and areas of plant endemism) classification system of African vegetation types. In the legend of the map, mapping units are grouped according to physiognomy.
The santol is believed native to former Indochina (especially Cambodia and southern Laos) and Malaya, and to have been long ago introduced into India, the Andaman Islands, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Moluccas, Mauritius, and the Philippines where it has become naturalized.

Uses. Culinary. The ripe fruits are harvested by climbing the tree and plucking by hand, alternatively a long stick with a forked end may be used to twist the fruits off. The pulp is eaten raw and plain or with spices added. It is also cooked and candied or made into marmalade. [citation needed]

Santol grows wild in the tropical regions of India. Santol is fast-growing tree that may reach 150 feet in height in its original habitat. It makes a good shade tree.
