When Is A Wilderness Permit Required? Wilderness permits are required on the Sierra National Forest for all overnight trips into the John Muir, Ansel Adams, Dinkey and Kaiser Wildernesses. Trailhead quotas (For Quota and Trail Information) are in place year round. A wilderness permit is not required for day hikes into the wilderness areas.
A permit is required year-round for overnight trips into John Muir, Ansel Adams, Dinkey Lakes and Kaiser Wildernesses, and Inyo National Forest, as well Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite National Parks. Only the leader or alternate specified in the reservation may pick up or use the permit.
Come Prepared - Obtain your campfire permit, bring your shovel, and a pail for water. SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS. Some areas, such as wilderness, have special restrictions regarding campfire use. It is your responsibility to find out what these restrictions are. The best way to do this is by contacting a local office in the area you intend to visit.
WILDERNESS PERMITS. A Wilderness Permit is required for all overnight trips to the Emigrant, Carson-Iceberg, and Mokelumne Wilderness Areas. If you plan to have a campfire in the Emigrant or Carson - Iceberg Wilderness you must obtain a Campfire permit from CAL FIRE.

Visitors must obtain a Wilderness permit for overnight camping as well as day visits, year-round. A quota system is in place for the 45 overnight destination zones from the Friday before Memorial Day through September 30 th each year.
To insure the preservation of the natural environment and assure the visitor of a quality visitor experience, the Department of Parks and Recreation has instituted a Wilderness Permit system; everyone entering the wilderness area for the day or for camping must have a permit in their possession.
