I would say you should get a gaming pc, run windows on it, and then get a server pop proxmox or ESXi on it. You can get some older machines that would make a perfect starter servers (old optiplexes or similar) for under $200.

Use your NAS as a central file storage or backup location for every PC on your network. FreeNAS also supports plug-ins, so you could even run a BitTorrent client or media server on it.
In this way, I can use the server to store and backup all non-system files for all my other servers and gaming/work computer in one central location, all accessible to each other. This way, I don’t have to email myself files or plug in flash drives to move files from computer to computer.
