UVB light is the form of UV light that is responsible for tanning and burning. Sunscreens work to protect from both UVA and UVB rays. Overall, sunburns exemplify DNA damage caused by UV rays, and this damage can come in the form of free radical species, as well as dimerization of adjacent nucleotides.

Cyclobuthane thymine dimer is a photolesion produced by UV radiation in sunlight and is considered as a potential factor causing skin cancer. It is formed as a covalently bonded complex of two adjacent thymines on a single strand of DNA.
UVB radiation-induced formation of dimeric photoproducts at bipyrimidine sites within DNA has been unambiguously associated with the lethal and mutagenic properties of sunlight. The main lesions include the cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and the pyrimidine (6-4) pyrimidone adducts.
