2 Οκτ 2024 · The Center for Cultural Landscapes (CCL) at the UVA School of Architecture is pleased to announce that Associate Professor Rosetta Elkin’s 2022 book, Landscapes of Retreat (K. Verlag) is the 2024 winner of the Landscape Studies Initiative’s J.B. Jackson Book Award.
Current Highlighted Projects. The Center for Cultural Landscapes produces research and creates new models of innovative cultural landscape stewardship in the region, the nation, and around the globe.
The new vision of the CCL is to center service, justice, and possibility—all in ways that continue to shape landscape history but emphasize its utility to people on the ground in the present, particularly those considered traditionally outside the academy or professional preservation.
As summer came to its end, we received the wonderful news that the UVA Center for Cultural Landscapes and the 2024 John Brinckerhoff Jackson Book Prize jurors composed of Kenneth Helpland, Sarah Lopez, and Beth Meyer, unanimously awarded Rosetta S. Elkin’s Landscapes of Retreat (K. Verlag, 2022) the 2024 JB Jackson Boo.

Published by K. Verlag (@k_verlag) in 2022, this “moving book” was praised by our jury— Kenneth Helphand, Sarah Lopez, and Beth Meyer— for its innovative contributions to landscape studies and its lessons for future climate-responsive imaginaries.
