Grading policies are determined by the faculties of each School or Division, yet a standard “common” grading policy is shared by most of these units, with only slight variations. Related practices are established by the University Registrar in conjunction with area Deans of Students and IT Services.

Grades of “UW” are assigned by the faculty when they are unable to grade a student because the student has ceased attending the course and has not officially withdrawn. Grades of “S” indicate “Satisfactory” and “U” indicate “Unsatisfactory.” A “U” grade carries no earned unit credits.

Questions about GPA’s of the students in any Division or School should be directed to its Area Dean of Students. GPA’s appear in my.UChicago (except for Booth). All students can request a certification of their GPA from the Registrar, separate or enclosed with a transcript.
Can someone explain how the UW grading scale works? I’m used to the high school system of A to F, where a C is the minimum required to pass. When I look it up on the UW website, it gives me a scale that translates the A to F scale to GPA, but with no percentages or minimum grade required to pass.
Usually, the syllabus states that the class is graded on a curve and it's set to a specific GPA. For example, business core classes have their curves set to around a 3.1. That means the median score that's earned in a class is set to that GPA.
The UW uses a numerical grading system, with certain exceptions in the schools of Dentistry, Law, and Medicine. Instructors may report grades from 4.0 to 0.7 in 0.1 increments and the grade 0.0. The number 0.0 is assigned for failing work or if a student does not officially withdraw.
