ACTION AND CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY. VANIQA® irreversibly inhibits ornithine decarboxylase in vitro and in vivo. This enzyme is integral in hair shaft production by the follicle. In preclinical and clinical studies, eflornithine administered topically has been shown to reduce the rate of hair growth.
What is the dosage for eflornithine? Eflornithine should be applied in a thin layer around the affected facial areas and chin and rubbed-in thoroughly. It is applied twice daily with at least eight hours between applications or as directed by a physician.
Vaniqa cream should be applied to the affected area twice daily, at least eight hours apart. Efficacy has only been demonstrated for affected areas of the face and under the chin. Application should be limited to these areas. Maximal applied doses used safely in clinical trials were up to 30 grams per month.
