Rack 2 comes in two variants: Free (open-source): Standalone application. Pro ($149 regular price, $99 until 2022): Standalone, VST2, more plugin formats coming soon.
Some devs, like NYSTHI and Alright Devices (Chronoblob2) still have their plugins in beta and haven't made it into the VCV Rack library yet for Rack 2. But there are many in the library already. Rack 2 installs separately to Rack 1, so you can have both installed.

On first launching VCV Rack, you are presented with a template patch that provides a nice overview of the signal connectivity required to create a MIDI-controlled, multi-oscillator monosynth. Two critical modules here are VCV Audio and VCV MIDI to CV.
Disk space: 1 GB. Plugin compatibility: VST2, VST3, Audio Unit, and CLAP. Up to 16 audio input/output channels, MIDI input/output, parameter automation. Supported DAWs: Ableton Live, Cubase, FL Studio, Reason, Bitwig, Reaper, Mixbus, Studio One, Cakewalk, Logic Pro, and GarageBand.
Download and install VCV Rack. Register for a VCV account and log in using Rack’s “Library” menu. Add or purchase a module on the VCV Library. Open the “Library” menu in Rack, click “Update all” (if updates are needed), and restart Rack once downloaded.
