11 Απρ 2022 · VCV Rack 2 Pro: Performance and verdict. On first launching VCV Rack, you are presented with a template patch that provides a nice overview of the signal connectivity required to create a MIDI-controlled, multi-oscillator monosynth. Two critical modules here are VCV Audio and VCV MIDI to CV.
Essentially, made me think that I can get some modules I really want (effects, filters, oscillators) and use VCV rack utility modules to modulate them, and save money on those less fun modules. I could happily ditch the hardware synths, ditch all the vsts and just use vcv rack and bitwig 8 track.
Cardinal runs much smoother for me, and being able to run inside a DAW is also a plus. I think the only benefit of Rack Pro is being able to buy additional closed-source modules.
VCV Rack is far from the only modular synth that runs in a computer. Offerings range from Csound and Pd, which are both powerful and free but not user-friendly, to Native Instruments Reaktor, which is very deep, but you’ll probably just use the stellar preconfigured instruments it ships with.

For those of you that don't know, it's free Euro Rack emulation software that runs on Win/Mac/Nix. The Pro version of VCV Rack costs $100 -- $150 starting in 2022 -- and some of the individual modules have price-tags attached.
