30 Νοε 2022 · The earliest U.S. Colonial Currency was issued by the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1690 to pay for a military expedition to Canada during King William's War. Between 1690 and 1788 all 13 of the original colonies plus Vermont issued currency denominated in pounds, shillings and pence.
Within the colonial and later Confederation periods, the circulation of currency was influenced by variable exchange rates and other economic pressures which varied from place to place and from time to time.
Colonial currency provides a fascinating window into the daily life of the early American colonists and, surprisingly, is a very easy and affordable collection area. Paper money helped to build the colonies and was critical to the Revolutionary War effort.
From 1690 until the ratification of the United States Constitution, paper currency notes emitted by the original Thirteen Colonies and the State of Vermont circulated in the emerging United States of America. Known as colonial currency, it was replete with numerous emissions and printing styles, many regionally influ-enced.
