25 Αυγ 2021 · Examples of Verse-Chorus Form in Pop, Folk, and Hip-Hop. The most popular songs tend to follow familiar patterns. While it’s possible to compose epic suites where no two parts are the same (looking at you, Dream Theater), most pop music sticks to traditional structures.
Verse-chorus form is so named because the two most important sections are the verse and the chorus. Other possible sections in verse-chorus form are prechorus, bridge, and postchorus. As an example, look at the form of Bon Jovi’s song “Livin’ on a Prayer,” given in Example 1.
In Verse-Chorus form, the chorus contains the “hook”—the memorable refrain—while the verse typically contains less memorable melodic material. A clear example can be found in the 1985 song “We Are the World.”
Sectional Chorus. Like a sectional verse, but a chorus. Begins on tonic and ends with a cadence. Often a parallel period or srdc structure. Sometimes has the same harmony and/or melody as the preceding verse. Feels like a sing-along anthem.
