It forms part of the quadriceps femoris muscle complex, and is the only muscle in this group to cross both the hip joint and the knee joints. Originates from the anterior inferior iliac spine and the ilium of the pelvis.
The rectus femoris muscle is one of the four quadriceps muscles of the human body. The others are the vastus medialis, the vastus intermedius (deep to the rectus femoris), and the vastus lateralis. All four parts of the quadriceps muscle attach to the patella (knee cap) by the quadriceps tendon.

Description. Rectus femoris is part of the quadriceps group. It is a bulk of muscle located in the superior, anterior middle compartment of the thigh and is the only muscle in the quadriceps group that crosses the hip [1]. It is superior and overlying of the vastus intermedius muscle and superior-medial part of Vastus lateralis and Vastus medialis.
Origin: Anterior inferior iliac spine and supraacetabular groove of ilium. Insertion: Tibial tuberosity, via tendon of quadriceps femoris muscle and patellar ligament. Action: Extends leg at knee joint; flexes thigh at hip joint. Innervation: Femoral nerve (L2-L4).
