Vestibular migraine is a type of migraine. It happens when signals involved with maintaining balance, hearing and sensing pain get a bit mixed up in the brain. The balance organ of the inner ear (shaded in purple in Figure 1), would normally tell the brain about the position and direction your head is facing.
Around 40 per cent of migraine sufferers will experience vertigo or balance disturbances before an attack or as the main symptom – this is known as vestibular migraine. The word vestibular relates to the inner ear, which is important for our sense of balance.

What is Vestibular Migraine? Many people know of migraines as headaches associated with other symptoms like nausea and/or vomiting, sensitivity to light, sound or movement. This is why most people like to lie down in a quiet and dark room until the symptoms subside.
