The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami struck on December 26, 2004, following a large underwater earthquake of magnitude 9.1 to 9.3 off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake caused a series of huge tsunami waves that hit more than a dozen nations, including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, the Maldives, Myanmar, and Somalia.
From people who experienced the tsunami in 2004, someone said “I saw the water coming towards us, and the water was washing up houses and gathering speed” (Lamb). After the first hit, a second wave came more strongly toward everyone near the coast.
In Sri Lanka, the December 2004 tsunami killed 35,000 people and left 900,000 homeless. This is quite a lot in a nation that has only 19 million people, with the majority of them living near the coast. Nearly 40 percent of the dead were children. It was Sri Lanka’s worst natural disaster in recorded history.
