The electrons in an atom are arranged in shells that surround the nucleus, with each successive shell being farther from the nucleus. Electron shells consist of one or more subshells, and subshells consist of one or more atomic orbitals.
Boxes, or horizontal lines represent the orbitals, arrows represent the electrons, and if an orbital is full, the electrons must be of opposite spin–one arrow pointing up and the other one pointing down. The orbital box diagrams are listed for the first 20 elements in the figure below.
Reveal answer. Two such electrons with opposed spins are said to be paired and are conveniently represented in a so called box diagram. Given a full atomic orbital can contain up to two electrons with opposing spins.
